Memorable Conversation

When is the last time you had a conversation that you remember a week later?

A month later?

A year later?

Question: what made it so memorable? Why does it stand out?

How about a conversation where your life changed?

When something shifted. A new agreement was made. Action was taken from it.

What might that look like?

I think about this often and I am certain there are ingredients for a memorable, potentially life-altering, conversation.

  • Showing up with intention. Willingness. Honesty.

  • Appropriate amount of distraction-free time in a suitable space.

  • Structured yet flexible.

  • Courage to say the thing no one else will say.

  • Great questions and honest answers.

  • Presence.

  • Reflection.

  • Silence.

  • Slowing down.

The result is something changes in one or both of the participants.

An Example

As the story goes, Lady Randolph Churchill, Winston Churchill’s American-born mother, was at a dinner where she sat next to both rival British prime ministers, Benjamin Disraeli and William Gladstone, circa the 1870s.

“When I left the dining room after sitting next to Mr. Gladstone, I thought he was the cleverest man in England. But when I sat next to Mr. Disraeli, I left feeling that I was the cleverest woman in England.”

She talked about it years later. It was memorable.

She was noticed.

The Power of Being Noticed

In my experience, a memorable conversation is where someone feels noticed.

A simple definition of noticing:

Noticing is careful attention that recognizes meaning. To see what matters.

In relational terms:

Noticing someone is the act of seeing them with enough presence, care, and specificity that they feel known.

They feel known.

When your unique gifts and your life are reflected back to you, when the mirror is held up, an opportunity to change your life is created.

Why Not Just Use the AI?

Talking with ChatGPT is interesting, and honestly it’s getting better every day.

It actually breathes!

Well, let’s be clear, it makes breathing sounds. Makes deep breath sounds before talking further.

It pretends to be human.

I wonder why they do that? Why is this being added?

I think it’s an attempt to be more human. To “humanize” the AI.

Because being human is amazing. It’s remarkable.

Here’s the thing — it is unlikely to ever actually be human. Our bodies are doing things all the time that we are not conscious of.

In a conversation, even one online, more than words are exchanged.

Nervous systems connect, resonance is created, people attune.

Research on physiological synchrony shows that when two people are genuinely present with each other, their heart rates, breathing, and even stress hormones begin to align.

This is not done consciously, or through effort, it happens simply through attuned attention.

Humans connecting.

The AI does not have a heart. It’s heart rate cannot sync with yours.

It does not breathe. It can’t actually breathe with you.

AI might say the right words and have impact, but there is no nervous system on the other end to synchronize with.

Your body knows the difference. So does your subconscious.

A discovery call, a coaching call, a conversation isn’t just an exchange of information — it’s connection.

I wrote about it here.

“The large language models can figure out the next word but have no idea what your heart needs.”

Your Dreams Are Closer Than You Think

Consider what you want.

What do you really want?

What is holding you back?

A year from now, what would be amazing to have happening in your life?

Feel what it would be like to get that.

It’s closer than you think.

The Discovery Call

A Discovery Call is a powerful conversation intended to help you get clear on what you want, what is getting in the way of that, and whether coaching with me is a fit for both of us.

You show up, as you, with your life, and all the context.

I show up as I would to coach any client. Present. Engaged. Interested. Curious.

Confidentiality is respected and crucial.

We start with what’s happening in your life and what brought you to the conversation. There’s no need to arrive with a perfectly defined goal.

We may explore what you want to be different.

We spend some time making that picture specific, then explore what’s getting in the way.

I listen, ask questions, and reflect back what I’m noticing.

My aim is for you to leave with a clearer sense of what matters to you. If working together seems valuable, we’ll discuss what that would involve, including the cost, and whether it feels like a fit for both of us.

This is bespoke. It’s one of one, like you.

Just like all my coaching calls.

Want to Connect?

If you, or someone you know, might be interested in a powerful conversation, I would be elated to connect.

I wrote this not AI. It’s spellchecked and then posted. By me. Typed with my hands. Fretted over by my brain. Made by a human.
