Making the Most of It
Random Missives by KrisMaking the Most of It“The Sandwich…Read more17 days ago · 3 likes · 2 comments · Kris SmithHad the opportunity to sit with my mom in the hospital recently.
All night.
She had fallen. Her hip was not good, lots of pain.
We talked. We sat. We dozed.
She was assessed, X-rayed, IV’d, and more. Fractured hip.
Her pain was a 10 out of 10. Waiting for help.
She chose to breathe and deal.
And I was there to help her, to take her mind off of it.
Everyday Heroes
While there, I was able to observe the nurses helping her and I was once again reminded of the choice each of us gets to make.
Even when it’s your job.
Even at 3:30 am when you too are exhausted and run off your feet.
Even when this is the 20th catheter that you have put in today.
Even when you have a pretty good idea that the hip is broken and you try to be positive (for her sake).
And you choose to smile. To speak kindly. To commiserate. To laugh. To hold space.
You show up.
Go above and beyond.
Simple kindnesses and care and commitment to taking care of strangers. Acting in a way that helps others to hold on to their dignity while they are having a very tough time.
Simply remarkable.
Unfortunately remarkable because this choice seems to be made less and less in many places.
Honestly, thank you ladies. You made all of this a bit more manageable.
You made a beautiful choice.
We don’t get to choose what happens.
We do get to choose how we show up.
More here.
What Choice Are You Making?
This remains a piece of work for me, an opportunity.
Had me pondering how I am showing up.
What is the look on my face?
What is the tone of my voice.
What energy am I bringing?
Am I there in kindness?
Am I showing up as grounded as possible? Regulated?
How about you?
We have these opportunities all the time.
All day long.
Every interaction. Even when no one is around.
Even if we miss one or show up “poorly” we get an endless supply of reps to try again.
Opportunity: make the beautiful choice.
